Hurlingham Club

The Hurlingham Club is a private club in Fulham that provides polo, croquet and racquet sports facilities for its members. Billington Structures  and Tubecon were awarded a contract for a new racquet centre at the club which is a complex steel structure.

The new racquet centre will provide a permanent structure with squash and indoor tennis courts, which will replace an existing temporary marquee structure. The new centre has been designed by David Morley Architects and it has a low profile with sunken courts and a barrel-vaulted green roof to minimise its visual impact.

Tubecon provided the steel frame which will accommodate four tennis courts and four squash courts, including an impressive series of large curved roof trusses. At its widest point, 40m spans of glazed roof let in natural daylight, while glazed gable ends incorporate mechanical louvers operated by a building management system (BMS) to naturally ventilate the structure.

The courts have been designed to meet Lawn Tennis Association and World Squash Federation standards. The main contractor for this project, ISG, will also create a single multiple use games area (MUGA), changing facilities and an upper level viewing gallery running the length of the building.  The squash courts and MUGA will incorporate a forced ventilation system with underfloor heating in the changing areas.

In addition to the new racquet centre, ISG will refurbish two existing outdoor tennis courts, reinstate car parking facilities and carry out hard and soft landscaping. The new racquet centre at The Hurlingham Club has been carefully designed to provide a discrete and sustainable addition to the existing facilities that are available for its members.
