Tubecon’s Commitment to ESG: Driving Sustainable Change

Tubecon, a division of Billington Structures, is committed to promoting environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) values. This commitment is reflected in the various initiatives the division is engaged with as part of the company’s community engagement, workforce development and driving sustainable change.

Environmental Commitment

Tubecon’s main focus is sustainable sourcing and innovative steel fabrication methods to reduce its carbon footprint. Their efforts – under the umbrella of Billington Structures – are aligned with the BCSA Sustainability Gold Charter, and Carbon Neutral Britain which both demonstrate a strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the steel industry.

Recently, a survey was sent out across the Group to select a carbon offset project that we would donate towards – the Hay Meadow Restoration, the Sea Kelp Recovery and Management Project and the Forrest Creation Project were the options presented to our staff. With such a close vote, the ESG team decided it was only fair to donate to all three projects.

Through these targeted efforts and with the continued support of the staff across the Group, we can offset our carbon footprint and further our environmental commitment.

Social Engagement

Tubecon, through its parent company Billington Holdings, is actively involved in the community to inspire future generations and support local jobs. Participation in events, such as educational engagement, and working in partnership with academies and career days, illustrates this commitment. To highlight our work as part of engagement days, representatives from Billington regularly present to students about career paths in the steel and engineering industries and emphasise the importance of creativity and problem-solving skills.

Our continuing efforts are part of a broader mission to nurture students’ curiosity and ambition and demonstrate to them the potential for a fulfilling career in engineering. Such initiatives not only benefit students but also contribute to the long-term sustainability of the industry by attracting new talent.

Workforce Development

A cornerstone of Tubecon’s social value strategy is participation in workforce development programmes. The Billington Group is a member of the 5% Club, an industry-led initiative that encourages companies to offer learning and earning opportunities, such as apprenticeships and graduate training programmes. As part of the 5% Club, one of our commitments is to employ 5% of our workforce (including apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formalised training programmes) within five years of joining. This initiative helps to close skills gaps, provides alternative routes to employment and encourages employee loyalty and motivation.

Supporting the BetterWeld apprenticeship scheme underlines Billington’s commitment to addressing the UK’s skills gap within the steelwork industry, particularly welding and fabrication, and boosting local employment. The partnership between Billington and BetterWeld provides valuable training and development to highly skilled fabricators and welders, preparing participants for a successful career in the industry.

David Perry, Associate Director of Tubecon, said: “At Tubecon we are proud to be part of an organisation that focuses on environmental sustainability, social value engagement and workforce development. We will continue to work to advance these values and create a better future for our industry and the communities we serve.”

Tubecon is committed to ESG principles, and its efforts not only improve the company’s impact on sustainable change and social value but also support the broader goals of creating a skilled, motivated and environmentally conscious workforce.
