A New Addition to Tubecon’s Active Travel Bridges

The team at Tubecon has extensive experience with fabricating and installing active travel bridges. The team previously employed by SH Structures were recently involved with a new project in South Yorkshire. The Barnsley Market Bridge will link the iconic Glass Works Square to the transport interchange and Market Gate car park. The new bridge will provide easy access to the town centre, and open up more active routes for residents and visitors to travel on foot or via bike. The bridge is also fully accessible with lifts at both ends making it usable by scooter and wheelchair users.

The steel bridge design actively complements the nearby Glass Works and blends in with the overall ascetic of the building. Designed by Arcadis and constructed by Keltbray, the Glass Works is part of development project that will create a modern and vibrant town centre which also preserves the town’s traditions and heritage. This includes the historic Barnsley Markets which are one of the oldest in Britain. This active travel bridge is just one small part of the wider town regeneration by the town’s council.

The team were also part of another ambitious active travel bridge project connected to the Forth and Clyde Canal. The Stockingfield foot and cycle bridge provides an important new link between the communities of Ruchill, Gilshochill and Maryhill. The curved bridge enhances accessibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists, while also bypassing a road tunnel.

The new bridge allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross the canal at a towpath level, rather than having to use a potentially dangerous road tunnel, before rejoining the canal towpath again. Scottish Canals expect that the Stockingfield bridge will increase access to the green and blue spaces in North Glasgow and boost activity in the area. The bridge was so popular that it went on to be shortlisted and win a number of awards for design, infrastructure and town planning.
