Greggs, a leading retailer of on-the-go food in the UK, has announced construction plans on two new sites to boost its manufacturing and logistics capabilities. Greggs currently has 2,500 shops and its long term goal is to have more than 3,000 shops in the UK. The new logistics site will play a key role in their expansion plans for the future.
The largest of the two planned developments is at the SmartParc SEGRO site in Derby. Greggs has entered into a lease agreement for a new state of the art frozen food production and logistics facility in Spondon near Derby.
The new facility covers 23 acres and it will include state of the art manufacturing and logistics equipment to optimise the efficiency of operations. The purpose-built facility will provide additional manufacturing capacity for some product lines, as well as logistics for frozen storage and fully automated robotic order picking and distribution solutions to maximise efficiency.
The site has been designed with sustainability in mind and this includes the use of an onsite shared heating and cooling system that recycles hot and cold air, a rainwater harvesting system, solar panels, electric vehicle charging points and a secure bike storage to help reduce emissions.
The site will include space for additional capacity to meet growth requirements in the future, as well as new production lines which might be commissioned to meet an increase in demand. Construction on the site is currently underway and this includes a pedestrian footbridge from Tubecon which will provide access across a service road.
The 42 metre long elevated link bridge weighs 28 tonnes. It was fabricated offsite in pieces and assembled into two halves on site, then lifted into place and spliced together in the air to form a continuous bridge. Installation of the bridge took one day to lift it into place and two days to finish the build.
