In addition to footbridges being an essential part of the UK’s pedestrian infrastructure, they also present an opportunity for some innovative designs and complex steel structures. For many years now the team at Tubecon, and members previously employed by SH Structures, have been delivering footbridges that are visually striking pieces of steelwork with incredibly innovative designs.
The 70 metre Knostrop footbridge in West Yorkshire is a remarkable piece of engineering. It is part of the Leeds Flood Alleviation scheme and the slender, elevated bridge has support piers on the weir’s walls. It uses steel plates to create a minimal yet strong structure, and the design not only enhances the area’s aesthetic, but it also provides a functional space where pedestrians can enjoy views of the River Aire. The steelwork, which is key to the bridge’s elegant shape, was delivered by the team that is now part of Tubecon.
In Swansea the Copr Bay Bridge provides a vital link connecting Swansea’s city centre to the new Arena and beyond to the Marina and the beach. This footbridge has an unusual design with its double-curved steel plates, features openings that showcase abstract swan silhouettes. The copper-coloured bridge pays homage to Swansea’s rich industrial heritage, while also being an important part of the city’s future. The steel fabrication was expertly handled by the team, previously employed by SH Structures, who’s experience, knowledge and keen eye for detail now form the core of the team at Tubecon.
A third footbridge, designed by Knight Architects, at Merchant Square in Paddington basin is beneficial for local pedestrians and an award-winning structure that is a visually arresting addition to the area. The bridge spans the Grand Union Canal and features a 3 metre wide cantilevering deck that opens like a traditional Japanese hand fan using hydraulic jacks. The five steel beams, which form the deck, open in sequence and the bridge employs counterweights to assist the hydraulic mechanism and reduce the amount of energy required for it to open and close.
In motion, the bridge is an eye-catching kinetic sculpture with a dramatic silhouette. The bridge at Merchant Square has also won a number of awards and the team, who were in the employment of SH Structures at the time of its build, now form the core team here at Tubecon were delighted to be involved with such a project that since its completion has received a lot of widespread attention.
